Lameness diagnostics and treatment

The treatment of lameness, from pleasure horse to athlete, starts with accurate diagnostics, beginning from the history of both the horse and the injury, followed by thorough clinical examination and gait  analysis.
Diagnosis involve a number of procedures - standing exam, evaluation of movement on different surfaces, hoof tester and flexion tests, diagnostic blocks, ultrasonography and digital radiography.

Treatment may consist of:
  • systemic (oral or injectable) anti-inflammatories and pain relievers to manage multiple pain sources,
  • joint (intra-articular) and tendon injections with anti-inflammatory medicine to reduce inflammation and pain,
  • “regenerative therapies” including Extra-Corporeal Shockwave, Stem Cell Injection, Injection of Platelet Rich Plasma and Autologous Conditioned Serum,
  • complementary therapies like acupuncture, chiropractic and massage,
  • surgery.
